David Bowie, a famous rock n’ roll performer, is known for the classic hit song “Changes.” You may have heard it on the radio as the famous line “cha cha cha cha changes” is often repeated. Changes are constant and surprising. We change, our children change, times change, trends change, presidents change. By nature changes make life interesting and sometimes without them lives may be in danger.

As the leaves change color so our lives change over the days, months and years. “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever”. Thanks be to God He doesn’t change. Malachi the prophet echoes clearly, “I, the Lord God, do not change.”

This fact is truly comforting to the children of God who live by faith in Jesus Christ, the World’s Savior. This fact is alarming to those who live outside the faith covenant. Our unchanging God will deliver those who mourn their sin and cling trustingly to Him. Those who live ignoring His unchanging saving Word are left to perish in their own foolishness.

We can all begin to make changes in our lives. Eat or drink a little less, pray a little more, worship and read Scripture, regard our neighbor’s needs as important, or simply change someone’s day with a smile. These are certainly samples of good changes, but none of them in and of themselves will make one right with God Almighty.

God, by not changing but rather assuming a human nature, came as a baby to save and deliver. He did not tarnish, change, or compromise the Law of God but obeyed in thought, word, and deed. Gladly, Jesus fulfilled the entire moral law to save disobedient children like you and me. Even though He never sinned, he was viewed as the most wicked and foul person by His Father. Jesus was punished in our place as the vilest offender. The greatest exchange took place at the cross. His holiness was bequeathed to us. And death, which changes us most drastically, did not stop Him from giving us the victory. Death is the most alarming change we face. It could strike today. The unchanging God comes to your rescue and He defeats this dreadful foe in your place. Heaven’s doors are now wide open because of Him – make a change and attend church this Sunday.
