C5 Studios Community Arts Center presents a new show of monotypes and paintings by Nora Akino.

Born in Japan to a family of artists, Akino spent her childhood living in Japan, India, Nepal, Mexico, Canada, and the United States, creating art from a very young age.

During the years before making Bishop her home, Akino found herself feeling a deep affinity for the landscape, nurtured over many visits to the Eastern Sierra.

In the words of the artist “I was always struck by the overwhelming presence of this land – two massive 14,000 foot mountain ranges flanking the deepest valley in the U.S., the vast sky that is the stage for a never ending drama of clouds and shifting light, and the inhospitable barriers of heat and rough terrain that render much of the landscape impenetrable in summer. This is what I came for, year after year.”

After relocating to Bishop, Akino found herself driven to finding out more about this landscape that captivated her, particularly its history and ongoing struggle for ecological and cultural integri

ty. Immersing herself in both a physical exploration of the land and a process of learning about the region, in particular through the voices of its first inhabitants, she found that her respect and admiration for the landscape and those whose ancestral home it is deepened still further. As Akino explains in her artist statement, “I dedicate this show to the vision of Payahuunadü as it was and is still in the memories and hopes of its Indigenous people and to their current struggles to protect the land.”

C5 Studios is proud to present this unique show of monotypes and paintings that so beautifully reflect a fascination with and honoring of the landscape that surrounds us that will resonate with many of the folks who call this valley home.

The show opens to the public on Friday, Oct. 7, with a reception from 5 - 7:30 p.m. All are welcome.

C5 Studios Community Arts Center is located at 210 S. Warren St., Bishop. For more information, go to www. c5studios.org or call (760) 258-1059.
